Members Day - Swarm Management and AFB Awareness
Today the weather turned it on for us, what a great day it was to be out working with our bees. We had a great turnout to the apiary, thanks to everyone for coming along.
We split off into two groups at the start of the field day. The first one looked at the Flow Hive to discuss its ins and outs for the new beekeepers who have recently picked one up. The second group went through the Langstroth hive to look and discuss swarm management. As it turned out, this hive was ready to swarm as there were a number of Queen cups already underway and capped. We were able to take these queen cups and some brood to create splits, which was timely as we now have the new Horizontal Hive and some resource hives that needed to be populated.
Later in the day members were shown and invited to take an AFB test sample on some frames that looked a little suspect. One of these slides will be sent to the DPI testing Laboratory for testing, just to be sure.
All in all, we hope everyone had a good time and was able to learn something, we will be back again in November for the Varroa and other Pests Members Day. Hope to see you there.
